How to Clean Your Moroccan Rug
Remember these unique gorgeous pieces are handmade with love by the Women of Morocco!
To freshen up, air outside in the sunshine for a few hours and give a good shake while hanging over a railing clothesline etc. Never use any harsh chemicals, instead stick to mild soapy water (we recommend natural shampoo) for spot cleaning, baby wipes are also a good option for spot cleaning.
When a deep clean is required, we recommend taking your rug to a professional carpet cleaning service. Ask them to spot test your Moroccan rug prior to any deep clean.
If you're up for a DIY clean, you can give it a go and it's actually quite easy - we've put instructions below. Please read the following notes first.
Very Important! Always do a small spot test on your rug prior to getting the whole thing wet - especially if you have one of our pale faded rugs. Sometimes the natural dyes still present inside the wool fibres will leach out colour when wet. If you notice this occurring after a spot test, you will need to take your rug to a professional carpet cleaner instead to avoid the dye running and changing the appearance of your beautiful Moroccan rug.
DIY Cleaning Your Moroccan Rug – The traditional way!
Remember you are going to need 4-5 sunny days to dry your rug out in the sunshine as the wool needs to dry completely or it will go mouldy. Fill a bucket with lukewarm soapy water (natural shampoo recommended), chuck your fave tunes on the stereo and get to work! Gently scrub your rug all over with a soft, clean household broom. Once your rug is washed, rinse with a bucket of clean lukewarm water, brush out excess water, then keep it laying flat in the sun to dry. Remember you are going to need 4-5 sunny days to dry your rug as the wool needs to dry completely or it will go mouldy. When your Moroccan rug is mostly dry, you can than hang it over a railing or clothes line to complete the drying process. Do not hang until mostly dry as natural dyes may run and your rug will be very heavy.
Enjoy!
